Charlie and Rana Schwab held their housewarming in February, 1892. After their departure around 1898 and until 1951, this mansion served as the residence for the superintendents of the Edgar Thomson Steel Works. From 1960-1982 it served as headquarters of the North Braddock School District, until the consolidation to form the Woodland Hills School District.

In 1983, Dr. Bruce Dixon purchased it from the WHSD and started restoration work. Shortly thereafter, he also became Director of the Allegheny County Health Department. In 2014, PhD Biochemist John Hempel bought the house from Dr. Dixon's estate with the intent of continuing his plans.

In tribute to the work that Bruce Dixon had put into the house - much of which was unseen infrastructural work, and since the house had never had a name other than Schwab Mansion or Superintendent’s House, by combining Schwab with Dixon it became Schwixon.

Our Mission

To restore and revitalize the former residence of Charles M. Schwab and Dr. Bruce Dixon to their original specifications.

We’ve lost too much of our architectural heritage. The craftsmanship that went into this place is just incredible.
— Dr John D. Hempel
